Mainstream

Mainstrme people are people who usually follow the crowd and take the hegemonic views in life very easily, they like to avoid risks by doing things that others may think is different or unnatural, this is because they like to feel accepted in society.

Resigners
may suit the older generation, they like dicipline, limitation, rigity,
duty and having roles.

Succeeders
This advert would relate to the succeeders as this group would normally be high class and management material. Therefore I think this advert would relate to them as blackberry is used by all business men as it gives them esurience knowing they have the latest smart phone. This would also suite them as succeeders choose brands that are well known, therefore they would choose blackberry as they are one of the leading phone companies.

Reformers
The reformers group would contain people who seek Freedom from restriction, personal growth and social awareness. These people would have attended higher education, therefore searching for products of a high quality. I believe this advert would fit this group as this group of people would want high quality products as they also do not look at finding a cheaper priced product. Also D&G is seen to be a high class brand which many people adore therefore being right for this group. This group would also search for products that are in trend at that time.

aspirers
The group would want to seek materialistic, acquisitive, affiliative and oriented to extrinsics. The group would also buy products demanding on the brands image and appearance to others. This group would also go for products on how popular they are. This group is normally associated with the younger generation. I believe this advert would fit this group as nike is seen to be a popular brand, also many of the younger generation would shop places who sell nike.

This group would contain people who are Heavy consumers of alcohol, eat junk food regularly and buy lottery tickets weekly. I think this advert would relate to this group.

action movie analysis

TODOROV:

this movie follows Todorovs theory as in the beginning it starts of with an equilibrium bruce wayne has been dorment for 8 years living his life normally, however all goes to chaos when an evil villain manages to release all the criminals into the city, however at the end he saves the city of gotham by defeating the enemy and destroying a bomb.

BARTHES:

the director also uses barthes' theory as we can see he uses other characters as enigma codes such as catwoman to suggest a love interest in the rest of the story,

LEVI - STRAUSS

This theory is about binary oppositions for example, the director uses this to contrast the hero and villain  in this movie he makes the villain look strong and the hero weak, until the end of the movie when the hero gains the strength to defeat him.

PROPP:
hero- batman
helper - catwoman
princess - gotham city

fish tank review

Fish tank review

Fish tank is a style of movie in which I enjoy the most, British, gritty and down to earth, a movie which shows the real life struggles of people who may have not had the most privileged lifestyle.
The acting from Katie Jarvis was excellent for what I know was her debut-acting job, however I was confused as to why her dancing was so bad, before the story had unfolded I kept thinking to my self, “is she just a bad dancer, or was this written in the script?” how ever as you watch on, you understand as to why her dancing is so horrible.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Michael Fassbender as Conner, mia’s mothers new boyfriend, he fit the role perfectly, playing the ‘mums new boyfriend’ act, eager to make her two daughters like him.
Also acting from Mia’s younger sister was a great addition to the movie, definitely the character who got the laughs out of the audience and, me, personally, I need a good laugh during a movie, no matter what genre.

Even thought this film was low budget, some of the cinematography by Robbie Ryan was seriously top class, there’s a great tracking shot following Mia and her friend Billy walking down a long road which lasts a good 30-45 seconds from which I can remember and great establishing shots of estate life etc.
Most of the camera shots were showing life through Mia’s eyes as she is the protagonist, more great cinematography work consists of the close up shots on the horse.

The Director used Mise en scene to a great extent in this movie to portray the lifestyle of Mia the protagonist, using cans of beer and bottles of cider to show her antisocial behavior, lighting was all pretty much natural to show a more realistic approach commonly used in these type of brit low budget films, the clothes all the characters wore looked realistic , looking at the fact that nobody works in the family.

Continuity was a main aspect in the editing of this film, the film was shown as the events happened and was done with clean cuts, this helps with the realistic approach and does not confuse the audience when watching, a great scene for editing is when Mia finds out Connors secret when looking at the video camera, she looks around the room to see a life she never had, each turn of the head the audience see’s an eye-line shot of things she was never privileged enough to have.

Although this movie was great, there were many errors to mainly the plot, things between Connor and Mia are unresolved, the fact they had sex and the fact she didn’t get in more trouble for nearly killing a child, also the reality of her surviving in wales with someone she doesn’t even know that well, for that matter, the reality of her going to wales with someone she doesn’t know that well!

Also the overuse of the word ‘cunt’ became annoying, and a reason to why she urinated on Connors living room floor still hasn’t come across my mind.

Overall fish tank was a great film, its flaws made it the style of film it is, and it always has the excuse of being a low budget flick.

fish tank questions

Q1. Nick Laws and Kees Kasander produced the film, executive producers were, Christine langan and David M. Thompson,
Companys include BBC films, UK film council and Kasander film company.

Q2. Ealing film studios, southall studios
Ealing film studios has had films such as Shaun of the dead, and the importance of being earnest made there.
Riverside studios has made tv shows such as, the apprentice, and Russell Howard’s good news.

Q3. I believe that Ealing film studios looks to be the most successful as it is the oldest running film studio in the world opened in 1902, still actively making produce.

Q4. The budget for fish tank was only $3million , which classes it as a very low budget film.

Q5.Open water
The inbetweeners movie
Kidulthood
Supersize me
Juno
Saw (one)
We can see from this list that documentary/drama style videos can be easily made under 5mill, also urban British and indie style films are known for being made low budget as things like cgi and special effects are not needed

Q6. Fish tank was funded with the aid of two company’s, BBC FILMS and the UK film council.

Q7. The HLF (heritage lottery fund) gives grants to young film makers however it must be used in a way to invest in the uk’s diverse heritage.

Q8.  Since the crating of the film was a 15, I belive it is targeted at everyone age 15 and above, mainly teens and young adults as they may be able to relate to some aspects and themes of the film also they would be able to relate to mia as she is 15 herself.

Q9. From research I have gathered that , horrors, comedy’s, and action, are the main genres for the 16-25 cinema market, this is because they give a sense of escapism to young adults which being one my self I love, also adding characters with sex appeal in genres such as comedy’s and actions, which can be a decision point for a teenager.

Q10. The main distributor for fish tank was IFC films.

Q11.  It is a company which releases a film to the public, in cinemas or by DVD,

Q12. The film was first promoted in France on may 14th 2009 at the Cannes film festival, from there on I believe word of mouth was a bog part of its promotion etc.

Q13.
There are many differences between fish tank and a Hollywood blockbuster, for instance the ending , blockbusters like to make the audience feel happy and good at the end and promote a highly positive attitude towards life, for eg, the hero always wins, however films such as fish tank, (British) show the harsh reality of life, Mia was never really a good dancer and in reality would never make it, however if Hollywood took this on , she would have made it somehow.
There are more obvious things such as production value, on the other hand, I feel that the fact films like fish hook are low budget helps with the over all reality aspect of the film.

Q14. I believe that the fast paced editing in the trailer of fish tank, helps as it doesn’t give the narrative away, when I watched the trailer I still had no idea what the film was about, I could only figure out the genre, this is good in my opinion as I really hate it when trailers literally reveal the storyline. Even though I didn’t know what the film was about the trailer was cleverly edited to make me ask questions to my self about the film and made me come to a conclusion that I was interested in finding out.

Q17. the trailer for fish tank shows the life of a young teenager who is behaving antisocially, we can she wants to become a dancer, but there are problems and harsh truths that come in her way.

Q18.  I believe that a rating of 15 was correct as although the film had continuous swearing in it, it was to show the reality of life in that situation, if anything I believe someone who is fifteen is less likely to use words such as ‘cunt’ and ‘fucking’ after viewing the film as they see how it can make you look as a person.
Its contained a small amount of nudity however it did not exaggerate it, the BBFC may have had doubts when deciding what rating the film rating should have been, however I believe that it was acceptable for people aged 15 and over.
A movie that has been rated 18, would usually have scenes of strong violence and scenes of a mature nature, such as sex scenes and bloody violence and gore.

learner response for assessment - Mr Halsey

LR-write an extra paragraph for Q2 about the general representation of Americans in the clip

Sound was used effectively to show Americans to be confident, by speaking loudly and clearly to colleagues, this contrast with the non americans as they are unheard of during this scene, this reassures the audience that there is an element of danger as we dont know what they are up to.

media awards film analasis

ROMEO-
The clip used cinematography very effectively, using close ups on the protagonists face to show emotions, also the use of selective focusing made the trailer look very professional and clean, the use of music was parralell which ment it fit well with the scenes, made the trailer feel more dramatic etc.
i liked the narrativeidea as it is taking a new twist on an old idea, also the acting was of good quality and really helped seel the movie idea to the audience.
mise en scene was used to a great efferet in this film, lighting corresponded to more negative parts being low key and vice versa.
www: great use of cinematography to draw the audience in
ebi: used more enigma codes instead of revealing the main plot

inner redemption

inner redemption used the todorov theory in a great way a charicter starts of in an equilibrium and then a dialemma occurs, however because this was a horror a slight twist at the end causes the audience to not know weather there is a happy ending.
mise en scene is used in a great way in the trailer, things such as props were thought of in detail, phsycic's cards and ball, settings were realistic, romantic dinner with love interest etc, lighting was a great aspect in the trailer as during the beggining everything is lit in a high key showinng an equilibrium, however as the story unfolds things start to go low key.
www: great use of mise en scene to ultimatley scare the audience also very original narrative
Ebi: cinematography was considered more.

p&c sound feedback

  • Music very urban (grime)
  • Use of violent/ agressive images, estates work well
  • Nice variety of images not all just one style
  • Nerd/geek/teacher interesting - does that mean grime and conventional ideas of intelligence/ academic success are mutually exclusive
  • is that the attraction of grime for young people ?
  • well designed power point - a little acompanying talk would have been good

There may have been some confustion with the images of the teacher and nerd becuase wer were trying to insinuate that their image does not match the image of the genre. As grime has an image of people that are violent and "gangster".

the attration of grime is for young people.

The ad featured an illustration of Jesus Christ grinning broadly and winking with an image of the Sacred Heart on his chest, alongside the headline, "Miraculous deals on Samsung Galaxy Android phones". It was created by Adam & Eve. Media was planned by the7stars.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned the ad after 98 people objected and claimed it was offensive to the Christian faith because of the imagery used, the use of the word "miraculous" and because it was published during the Easter period.
Phones4U defended itself by saying the intention of the ad, which ran in the Metro, was to portray a light-hearted, positive and contemporary image of Christianity.
The phone company issued an apology to all those who complained and withdrew the ads.

The Advertising Standards Authority(ASA) has announced a ban on the magazine advertisement for L’Oreal’s Revitalift Repair 10.

It ruled the image ‘misleadingly exaggerated’ the performance of the product.

The decision has been welcomed by Lib-Dem MP Jo Swinson, who is campaigning against the use of airbrushing and unrealistic images of beauty in advertising.

The British actress is not the first renowned beauty to have her image digitally enhanced to give a false impression of the benefits of using popular beauty products.

The moving text is a freestyle rap video made by grime daily,

Colour:
The colours used in the video a colours are usually colours that would pop and standout, how ever with the use of post processing, the editor has made these colours muted which gives an unusual but effective look to the video, this could connote that the rapper is unusual and doesn't do the same thing as everybody else, also the video has a yellow warm tint to it, which connotes a sunny calm day.

Composition:
the compsition is vaired as the camera moves around alot to make space for the words that appear while he is rapping, how ever it uses the general ule of thirds techniqe approprieatly.

Pose:
The young rapper is standing still but very confidently and using his arms to portray his words aswell as his voice, this is used in modern day rap video's to show power and confidence.

Type of shot:
The shot is a medium close up on the talent, this is used to show him performing as he is using his voice to perform, additionally it is almost the type of veiwing angle the human eye would see, this makes it seem to the viewer that they are actually in front of him and he is performing to them.

Setting:
the setting is outside a delivery type loading bay which is covered with a gate, this could be somewhere in the city and could connote the background from which where the talent came from.

Lighting:
the subject is very well lit and is outside, in my opining i think it is artificial lighting but the director chose to portray it as natural lighting by pushing the white balance to a more warm colour.

The colour of the image is monochrome this shows the contrast between light and dark, which may link to 50 cents bad and good parts of his life.
there is a line separating him from his past, the picture of fingerprints which connotes prison and crime ect, this means that he has changed his life around and is now a multimillionare rolemodel who is respected around the world.
The text 'i am who i am' is very large and spans across the middle of the advert, this may imply that reebok are enforceing people to be themselves.
The picture of 50 cent is a medium close up, this allows the veiwers to see the serious expression on his face, which may infer his charicteristics as a famous person.
the fact that the shot is a medium close up enables the audience to clearly see his face which may persuade fans to be interested in the advert.
we can see a studio shot of 50 cent, which gives a clean feel to the advert, this creates a focus on 50 cent and not anything else.
there is a low key lighting set up on 50 cent, this creates a very serious mood which could reflect 50 cent's life story backed up by a quote from him.
50 cents facial expression and body language connets that he has power and authority.

The film poster Anuvahood is aimed at promoting the feel good comedy film ‘ANUVAHOOD’.
We can see from the poster that the character on the right does not like the one on the left; this is because of his unwelcoming stare and body language. During the movie there may be a rivalry between these two characters.
The character on the left is pulling a silly face which may connote that the film is a comedy, which is backed up by the unusual colour scheme which may reflect that it is an unusual film.

The characters in the background may be less significant in the storyline as they are behind the front two, the woman in the background may connote sex appeal as she is striking a seductive pose.
Interestingly, the use of poses in the film poster is very different between each character which may infer that each character has a very different personality, e.g. violent, relaxed or angry.

The title is big and bold and uses slang, this may have been done to show the level of education of the characters have, also this would attract the younger generation as slang is widely used amongst ‘high-schoolers’ etc.
Additionally the tagline uses ‘wasteman’ which is also slang and the whole line may be able to relate to many viewers.

The colour scheme used is very bold bright and contrasted, this connotes that the film is uplifting and mainly happy and not a negative film.

The fact that the background of the city scape is cartoon and not real may connote that the film is for young adults aged range from 14-21.

The clothes worn by the characters are typical of an estate/ hood type area which gives us an idea of where the film may be set, however the poster has no set place, this use of mise-en-scene is very effective.

The facial expression of the characters are mainly either pulling silly faces or a very confused look, this can connote the idea of the characters being very uneducated or childish.
All characters are lighted to a correct exposure which is similar to a typical day lighting style however the poster is very saturated showing almost an unreal look.

We can see this is a non-hollywood film, from the actors names and director, also the music featured in the film is from british artists, this may have affected the quality of the film poster and film, because of the budget size the institution had.

As we can see from the play on words with the title and the actors who star in the film, the film is a hybrid (comedy, british ghetto) as it is a spin off on the hit british made films 'adulthood' and 'kidulthood'

Analysing  a media text (Halsey)

The image presents Jared Leto holding a hugo boss scent bottle upside down, aswel as the background image of skyscrapers  and the word turn also being upside down, this could connote that wearing the scent is a complete change from other normal everyday perfumes. Jared Leto has a sex appeal towards women, and by having him on the add it may persuade men into believing that buying the product will make them more like him.
Jared Joseph Leto is an American actor, director, producer, and musician. Leto has appeared in both big-budget Hollywood films and smaller projects from independent producers and art houses.

The over all colour scheme of the add is a light blue, almost clear ocean like colour, which could connote that the scent has refreshing cool smell and is not heavy or musky at all.

The tagline 'its your turn' is telling the audience that it's their turn to smell great but only aslong as they buy the product.

The logo 'hugo boss' is small and has been placed in the top right corner which normally may not be great idea, but because of the success the company has already, a potential customer already knows of the brand due to the distinctive bottle shape and overall look of the logo at first glimpse.

The overall lighting of the image is very well exposed showing it is a scent that can be worn every day, this can be backed up by the casual clothing the model is wearing.
the medium shot of Jared allows to show of his sense of style which may be appreciated by his fans, but it also allows to show his emotion on his face which is rather serious, this may infer that he truly believes in the product he is advertising.

First impressions and hopes

The reason I chose media for one of my four A-Level choices is due to the fact of my passion for creating videos whether they be short films or music videos, the thrill I get out of posting my work to youtube and getting feedback from friends and family is what makes me want to create more and more!
There hasn't been a day I can recall where I havent used some type of social network or video sharing site to entertain me for hours on end (ever since I discovered the internet at least).

My first impressions of Media AS is exactly what I thought it to be, a hard, but rather enjoyable course, also that I have two great teachers with years of experience to help me get my desired grade which is brilliant!

My hopes for the course is that it will teach me the skills and techniques I will need to know to land me a qualification, by doing this it will enable me to get a job in the field of the music/media industry which is where I would like to be in 5 years time.
